Active Retirement Ireland is a network of over 550 local and community based voluntary organisations involving a membership approaching 24,500 older people in a countrywide active retirement movement. Founded in 1978 and currently organised into nine regional councils, the movement’s principal aim is to help men and women, who are retired or semi-retired, from paid or unpaid work, to lead a full, happy and healthy retirement by offering organised opportunities for a wide range of activities – holidays, outings and socials; creative and learning programmed; indoor and outdoor sports and community work.
Active Retirement Ireland seeks to provide a means by which affiliated local associations may secure appropriate support to enhance their individual and collective activities. It also aspires to ensure a corporate voice representing the views of its affiliated community based associations and to act on their behalf with central and local authorities and other relevant bodies.
The movement is nationwide, non-party political and non-sectarian with a membership of men and women drawn from many occupations and all walks of life.
